Gameloft Classics: 20 Years
Mobile gaming has come a long way since a Tetris variant on the Hagenuk MT-2000. In 1997, Nokia launched the mobile game Snake, which instantly became successful and was included on any mobile device manufactured by Nokia. Gameloft was founded in 1999 and develops/publishes mobile games, sometimes creating their own IP, sometimes based on existing/popular IP. In 2018, Gameloft compiled 30 of their games into a free app known as Gameloft Classics: 20 Years.
When starting up, you'll see all the games one by one, tap a button to flip through them to find your game. Once you find it, tap "Play" to enter the game. You can play in either portrait or landscape. Since most of the games come from the pre-smartphone era, virtual controls to play them, in Game Boy (for portrait) and PlayStation Portable (for landscape) configurations. The games have been modified to accommodate the virtual controls. Go to the "Help" section in the game's main menu to know about its controls. The game genres are puzzle, shooter, life/romance simulation, arcade action, sports and cards. The games are completely free-to-play.
Obviously, Gameloft couldn't include games from other IPs due to licensing costs and matters, but what Gameloft included is probably the stuff to play and cherish for as long as it lasts. While not a retro gamer myself, I fell in love with some of the games I played and wanted to play more... if my phone provider didn't charge me for using my phone more than I should. The app is only available on Android, but with a storage of 75 MB, you can even play it on a potato Android smartphone running Android 4.1 or beyond. Download it, play it, enjoy it.
